Body Glove, a world known name to sufers all over the globe, was started right in our backyard. The company was founded in 1953 by twin brothers Bill and Bob Meistrell. “In 1953 we invented the first practical wetsuit, which revolutionized surfing and diving. We came up with the phrase fits like a glove and Body Glove was born”. The wetsuit was invented behind their newly bought surf shop in Redondo Beach, Dive N’ Surf. The insulating material used in the back of refrigerators is what sparked the wetsuit idea. They needed a sturdy, yet light material to keep them warm during the cold winter months in the water. Body Glove is one of very few surf companies still privately owned and operated by the family that started it. The company has now branched out into other product categories, they now make swimsuits, clothing, shoes, life vests, sunglasses, wakeboards, backpacks, phone cases, and snorkeling equipment. Sadly last year, Body Glove lost one of its inventors Bob Meistrell. This is a big loss for the Body Glove family, but his memory will forever be cherished.
